Framed New York prints. My collection and the gear I’ve used over the years.

The world of photography has changed beyond recognition over the years, with new technologies, styles and platforms constantly redefining how we capture and share images. The one thing that has remained constant is the basic way a camera works. Aperture, shutter speed (time value) and ISO haven’t changed — they still control light and exposure. Even if you use an iPhone, those three elements are still at work in the background, even when you don’t need to think about them. At its simplest a camera remains a box with a hole in front of it, directing light to form an image.

For many years I used a medium-format film camera, the Bronica ETRSi, and many of the London prints on this website were taken with that reliable camera. I’ve always preferred Canon even though I appreciate Nikon cameras, and over the years I’ve owned various Canon SLRs — the A-1, AE-1 Program, several of the early digital EOS models — and I now shoot with two Canon 1DS Mark II bodies. Although they are the elder statesmen of the DSLR world, the 1DS cameras are built like tanks, and I used them for all of the New York and Paris prints.

Using a tripod is an essential part of my kit, as you might expect, since I work with slow shutter speeds for the light-streak images you see in the galleries; my current Manfrotto has accompanied me through many years of shooting. I never apply post-production in Photoshop — ever. I’m very old-school: having spent years developing and printing my own work, I believe an image should be finished in-camera.

Nothing on my website has been manipulated in any way. You can see the galleries of New York prints below:

I‘m working slowly on a set of New Zealand and Australia prints which I hope will be ready during 2026.
