Black and white Framed prints of London in the January snow.
This blog is a little out of date, but in January it snowed in London and here are a few highlights from the set of prints I made. You can see them and the rest of the London black and white prints collection here. I travelled mostly by bike and by train into the centre of London, then along the river through Clapham and Battersea and eventually ended up in Wimbledon. Despite the cold and the crisp winter light, I loved every minute of it.
These prints are all now limited editions, so they will become collectable once I sell them all. This particular set of prints is 1 of 100. Normally my limited edition sets are issued in runs of 150. I sign, title and number each print on the white cardboard mount.
The print above shows Nelson Mandela’s statue in Parliament Square. His near neighbour Churchill looked a bit chilly but hadn’t quite managed to attract the same level of headgear that Nelson Mandela had. Shooting in the snow brings its own challenges. Staying upright on the bike was one of them, and reflections from the snow can fool the camera into thinking there is more light in the scene than actually exists. I generally stop the aperture down by about two stops to achieve a correct exposure.
The print on the left shows Wimbledon Common and the one on the right captures the London Eye. All of these images were made with my Bronica medium-format camera using Ilford 400 ISO black-and-white film. I developed the film myself in the darkroom and produced the framed prints you see above by hand.
