Framed prints of black and white New York Skyscrapers.

Skyscrapers in New York are challenging to photograph. You either have to get far away from them and capture a long row of towering buildings, or you stand in the street and look straight up to convey their scale. Alternatively, you can find a high vantage point to shoot down across the skyline. Cityscapes in London are a bit easier to compose, as the bridges provide excellent viewpoints and there’s a river running through it, giving you the option to shoot from the opposite bank for clear, sweeping views.

Standalone pictures of skyscrapers in New York can make beautiful prints, and when shot at an angle this one works particularly well as a striking portrait framed print. You can see this particular print here. Panoramics are also a great shape for showcasing city skylines and their sweeping lines. If you can’t capture the full height of a building in the image, going full width is often the best solution. In New York, shooting from the bridges or from across the Hudson will put you far enough away to capture a strong panoramic print. London, by contrast, is often easier for full-width images. I have a new set to explore in the London panoramic gallery here.

A standard 50mm lens is all that’s required, and it will capture plenty of foreground while letting the skyscrapers sweep and bend into the sky with graceful perspective. This pair of black and white framed prints complement each other nicely, creating a cohesive visual dialogue. They were both taken with a 60mm lens for slightly tighter framing and a more intimate feel. You can see the full selection of black and white New York prints in the collection.
